Mountain biking · Sani2C Edition

Three days. Two riders. One strong finish.

A 16-week, race-specific plan for Sani2C. Built for pairs who want to climb with control, descend with confidence and still have legs on day three.

Two mountain bikers riding singletrack through the green hills of KwaZulu-Natal

Why this plan exists

Sani2C rewards patience.

Sani2C covers about 270 km over three days, with close to 4,000 m of climbing and more than 5,000 m of descending. Stage 2 is the big day: around 96 km, with long descents into the valley and long climbs out of it. Most pairs lose time the same way: too hard on day one, too little food, and nothing left when it matters.

This plan builds your climbing on tired legs, teaches you to go straight from a descent into a climb, and trains your gut for 5–7 hour days. You practise riding as a pair from the start, and a full race rehearsal in week 14 confirms your kit, fuelling and pacing before you taper.

Inside the plan

Sixteen weeks, counting down to Stage 1.

  1. Weeks 1–3

    Foundation

Consistent riding, aerobic endurance, steady climbing and the start of strength training.

  2. Week 4

    Recovery and FTP test

A lighter week with your first 20-minute FTP test to set your power targets.

  3. Weeks 5–8

    Climbing build

Longer climbs at 80–85% FTP, descent-to-climb practice, fuelling from 60 g per hour and an FTP retest in week 8.

  4. Weeks 9–12

    Endurance build

20-minute climbs, 4-hour Saturdays, fuelling at 75–80 g per hour and a final FTP test in week 12.

  5. Weeks 13–14

    Race-specific

Longer Sundays, an optional three-day riding block, a 30-minute climb and a full race rehearsal.

  6. Weeks 15–16

    Taper and race

Less volume, short sharpening efforts and race week, with Stage 1 on the Thursday of week 16.

  • 16 weeks of structured bike and strength workouts that sync to Garmin, Wahoo and Zwift
  • About 6.5–10.75 hours a week in build weeks: 5 rides and 2 short strength sessions, with lighter recovery weeks
  • 20-minute FTP tests in weeks 4, 8 and 12, so your targets keep up with your fitness
  • Sustained climbing that builds from 2 × 10 minutes to a continuous 30-minute climb straight after a descent
  • Back-to-back weekends building to 4 hours 30 minutes on Saturday and 2 hours 30 minutes on Sunday
  • Partner pacing, regrouping and refill practice, because you race as a pair
  • Gut training from 40–60 g to 70–80 g of carbohydrate per hour, with exact amounts to pack for every long ride
  • A taper and a race week with pacing, fuelling and recovery guidance for each of the three stages

How it works.

Telani sets up your plan in TrainingPeaks herself, so there is no store purchase to make. After that, you train on your own, and her support comes at set points: zones checks after weeks 4, 8 and 12, a review of your week 14 rehearsal, your race-day plan in week 15 and a pre-race call.

Frequently asked questions.

When should I start?

Stage 1 falls on the Thursday of week 16, and the plan ends on Stage 3, the Saturday. In TrainingPeaks, set the plan to end on your Stage 3 date and week 1 lines up automatically. Always check the official Sani2C website for the confirmed dates.

Do both partners need the plan?

Yes. Each rider follows the plan on their own TrainingPeaks account with their own FTP. You compare your test results to agree a shared climbing pace. With Plan + Race-Day Plan, a pair books together for R3,950.

Do I need an FTP before I start?

Use a recent FTP test or your best honest estimate for weeks 1–3. Your first proper test is in week 4, and you retest in weeks 8 and 12.

Can I start late?

Yes. Begin at the week that matches your countdown to race week and do an FTP test first, so your targets are accurate. With fewer than 8 weeks to go, individual coaching is the safer route.

Do I need TrainingPeaks Premium?

No. A free TrainingPeaks account is enough to receive and complete the plan.

What happens after I book Plan + Race-Day Plan?

After payment, Telani connects with you on TrainingPeaks and loads the full plan into your calendar, lined up to race week. You train on your own and check in at set points: your week 4, 8 and 12 FTP results for a zones check, your week 14 rehearsal notes, and your race-day plan from Telani in week 15, followed by a call in race week. Weekly feedback and plan changes are part of TRIFIT coaching, not this package.

How long are the longest rides?

The longest ride is 4 hours 30 minutes on the Saturday of week 14, with an optional 5 hours if you are recovering well. Sundays build to 2 hours 30 minutes. Weekday rides are mostly 60–75 minutes.

Do I need a power meter?

Yes, or a smart trainer. Sessions are written as a percentage of FTP. Every ride has an indoor option, so you can do the key sessions on a smart trainer if your mountain bike has no power meter.

What if I miss sessions or get sick?

Skip what you missed and carry on with the current week. Do not try to catch up. For a programme that adapts around your life, TRIFIT coaching is the better option.

Can I use the plan for a different stage race?

Yes. The plan has no fixed dates and works for other three-day mountain bike stage races with long climbs and descents. Race week is written around the day of Stage 1.

A note on safety. Stop training and seek medical assistance if you experience chest pain, dizziness, unusual breathlessness or pain that changes how you move. Always wear a helmet, ride technical terrain within your skill level and choose safe routes for your efforts. This plan is general training guidance and does not replace medical advice. It is created independently by TRIFIT and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Sani2C or its organisers.
